The Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race Weymouth 1994 Tall ships out in Weymouth Bay In 1994 Weymouth hosted the start of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race. It was a remarkable event in Weymouth's history. It was the third time that Weymouth had hosted the start of the Tall Ships Race, the only port ever to do so. The spectacle of so many tall ships with all their finery crowding into the harbour and out in the bay is unlikely to be forgotten. A sense of maritime history could not have been better presented. The atmosphere down by harbour where the ships were moored was one of fascination and awe of the sheer splendour of history presented for all to enjoy. Some of the ships' crews allowed visitors aboard to see for themselves what one of these great ships was like inside. Demonstrations of various arts of seamanship were also given.
